she was a lot of fun, catherine. she enjoyed life a lot. right now at 11:00, summertime activities in the dead of winter. check out the kids playing in the fountains in downtown san jose. believe it or not, there is a a cool down headed our way. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm chris sanchez. >> diane dwyer is off tonight. we are looking at a major pattern shift after we saw record temperatures for most of the month. >> we start with anthony who shows us when we might see rain or snow. it could be this week. >> excellent news here on the weather front. we are talking about a major storm system building across the pacific. you can see it spinning from the satellite. this thing is not only expected to cool us, but this is expected

to open the storm door wide open. that would mean rain and snow. so far this winter, we have a huge ridge where most of the western half of the u.s. is average and dry. the eastern u.s. is a different story. you heard a ton about the polar vortex. much of winter. that is about to change. expected to sink further south and the storm door opening and cooler temperatures headed to the bay area. yesterday many locations got into the 70s. mill valley is one of the warmest at 79. by thursday at 62 and even san francisco is 71 yesterday and expected 59 come thursday. temperatures are expected to cool and rain is in the forecast as we head towards wednesday and thursday. we will talk about that in a bit. >> a violent end to a late night party in san jose. police are searching if are a

suspect in a deadly stabbing in the east foothills. this marks the city's fourth homicide of the year. the victim is a san jose state student. nbc bay area is at the scene for the investigation. >> reporter: they spent the day interviewing witnesses and there were likely a lot of them. the stabbing happened at a party. i spoke to the victim's girlfriend. she was too upset to speak to us on cam remarks but her boyfriend was trying to break up the fight when he was attacked. a 21st birthday party ended violently after a man was stabbed to death. >> he was a very nice guy. hardworking guy. went to school. >> the party was on the 3400 block of sun crest avenue. >> it was about 11:00. some of the girls got into a competition. my brother and sister tried to

pick up the party. >> the family said the crowd of 20 to 30 people moved to the front of the house where the argument escalated and they said sam got involved. >> he tried to break up the fight. somehow he got back. >> san jose police said he he was taken to a local hospital where he died. they collected evidence and interviewing witnesses. >> he tried to ask information about coming to the party and tried to get the name. the suspect is likely someone familiar to them since only close friends were invited to the party. >> the victim's girlfriend said she is shock and truly devastated by what happened. she told us the physiology student at san jose university and they dated for over a year. nbc bay area news. >> thank you and this just into the newsroom.

police in antioch are looking for a gunman responsible for shooting i man outside a jack in the box this afternoon. it happened about 4:00 on lone tree way west of highway 4. the 33-year-old was shot several times in a silver van. they rushed him to a helicopter and airlifted him to the hospital. it is not clear what led up to the shooting. the victim is expected to survive. >> former classmates of a russian college student who calls the bay area home are reacting tonight to his arrest on bomb-making charges. police arrested a teen in pennsylvania where he is an engineering student at state. nbc bay area has reaction from know one of the classmates and with details on the charges that teen now faces. monty? >> good evening. the 19-year-old graduated from belmont last year. he faces very serious charges out lining the criminal complaint including possessing a

weapon of mass destruction. he did not object police say when officers came to the apartment near the campus of state and altoona looking for an illegal marijuana grow. the russian national let them in and in addition pot plants, officers found a suitcase containing a homemade bomb with an explosioned fuse and other bomb-making chemicals that he allegedly bought online. he reportedly told an officer he was going to blow things up and didn't say exactly what. >> i had to look twice and looked back at my year book to make sure. how is that even possible? >> steven attended class with him at carlmont high school. he said he was quiet and socially awkward, but never seemed dangerous. >> when we were in classes together, he was very shy and to himself. >> his home in san carlos, a

woman who identified herself as his mother said she plans to travel to pennsylvania to be near her son as he faces criminal charges, but would not comment beyond that. one neighbor who didn't want her face shown said she was shocked that the teen admitted he practiced making bombs in california. >> the reaction is very surprised. i'm upset. >> it carries a penalty of in prison, but because he is not a u.s. citizen, the legal expert said if he is convicted he would be subject back to russia. >> it's an aggravated felony, she supportable. even if he lived his entire here. >> because of apparent lack of involvement, she doesn't think the case is related to terrorism. >> he could be a nut. he is also a mechanical engineering major. he might have had legitimate reasons to try to do an experiment. >> he is being held on $500,000

bail. he is due in court for a preliminary hearing on february 5th. live in san carlos, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> new details about the man who died after boogie boarding in big waves off the santa cruz coastline. the coroner's office identified him as from mountain view. he crashed into the rocks at a light house point on friday. the swimmers jumped in, but the surf was just too rough. two of those would be rescuers suffered injuries and were treated at the hospital. a second set of rescuers didn't manage to pull him out, but it was too late. the fire department is urging swimmers to be aware of ocean conditions before hitting the water and to always be ready for changes. >> san jose state university police are warning students to be on guard after two sexual assaults on campus last night. a man rode his bike behind the victims and touched them

inappropriately. the suspect who was last seen riding towards the campus village apartments is a white man in his 20s with a thick mustache wearing a black hoodie and pants. they were not injured, but some students are on edge. >> i pretty much look around everywhere i go. i have it ready. i'm more cautious whenever i am coming out. i was like you want to go with me. i tell my friends to walk with  me. it's just scary. >> campus police are providing escorts and urging students not to walk alone at night. >> a man opened fire in a pub, injuring person who didn't know they were shot. it happened before 1:00 this morning at the red coat british pub and restaurant. the male suspect was acting strangely and pulled a gun out and started firing. >> and most of the rounds went

into the ceiling with ricochets. unfortunately one of the rounds did find one of the patrons and struck him in the left buttocks. >> the victim was not seriously injured. in fact his friend had to tell him he was hit and was bleeding. he didn't know. the suspect got away before they could get there. >> a police officer said he had no choice but to shoot and kill a dog after it bit an 11-year-old boy. they were called after receiving reports that two german shepherds were on the loose. officers found the dogs in nearby yards and attempted to hold them until animal control could come for them. when one of the dogs charged an officer, he fired the gun, striking and killing the dog. the second dog was apprehended and quarantined by police. police say the 11 year old's injuries were not serious. we now know who police in maryland say pulled the trigger on a mall full of people

yesterday and insight into his state of mind. police took his journal into evidence and say in it he writes about being unhappy. we have the answer. >> a deadly shooting and now a difficult investigation. what drove 19-year-old darian marcus agular with no criminal record to shoot and kill two people in a busy shopping mall. investigators searched the home he shared with his mother for clues. >> the shooter's house, we did have documents on the computers and other evidence. we are working through those. there is a journal. he does express general unhappiness with his life. >> on saturday he took a taxi to the mall in columbia outside of baltimore and waited about an hour before opening fire. >> i heard -- it sounded like somebody dropped something. >> i saw people run and i heard people screaming and i heard it again.

it was just boom, boom, boom! >> we have an active shooter in the mall. >> he shot and killed two employees of a skate shop including a young mother before turning the gun on himself. he was carrying a backpack of ammunition and homemade explosives. >> he literally fired. >> agular had performed the shotgun in december. they were from the same city, investigators are yet to confirm if they knew one another. the mall in columbia is set to reopen, returning to normal days after tragedy. >> nbc news. >> next, an abrupt end to a cruise ship vacation. >> they are investigating the virus that left hundreds of performs sick at sea. plus -- >> years ago we used to say it's winter time. it will get here.

. new at 11:00, another day of hot lavad6 from mt. edna in it. the volcano has been active since thursday, the lava flow on the eastern side of the mountain. the nation's air traffic authority reopened and the activity had it shut down. it caused 18 flights to be diverted or canceled. >> it was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, but it turned into a sickening experience. the explorer of the seas was in st. thomas and the u.s. virgin islands and the officials from the centers for disease control were looking into the outbreak of a stomach flu. gabe gutierrez was with us. >> today health officials for the centers of disease control was in the u.s. virgin islands,

scrambling. >> i was one of them. it was awful. >> more than 300 passengers reported vomiting and diarrhea. >> it was a terrible experience. i have been on the boat before. we had an amazing time, but this time it has been awful. >> after departing on tuesday, the ship bypassed a planned stop in haiti to be sanitized in puerto rico before moving on to st. thomas. the mayor of eastern pennsylvania is on board vacationing with his wife. he is not sick, but said other passengers have been quarantined in their room. >> a lot of activity sanitizing the various railings. >> norovirus is a fast moving stomach bug. they said it sickens 21 million people in the u.s. and kills up to 800. dozens got sick on another royal caribbean cruise. >> for can spread readily from person to person.

the snow doesn't come soon. nbc bay area introduces us to a business owner who said it's a troubling thing. >> right now it's not much of anything. it's a mess. >> years ago half of this parking lot would be buried from snow removal. you could not see this from the highway. the snow would be so tall. we used to say it's winter time, it will snow. it will get here. we don't say that anymore. the past couple of years have been so weird. from years ago to have 750 inches of snow and last year having the first snowfall in february. it is weird. this year we were able to work during the holidays and that helps a lot. the year before last, there was enough snow for christmas. christmas through new year's and martin luther king holiday weekend represents about 40 plus% of the income for the year. that's not just us. that's any tourist-based

anderson and nice and soft. the browns win, 76-64. women with ucla taking on number 19 cal and berkeley. late in the first half, we were tied at 29. boyd drivewayings towait to the half. up six and drives underneath. she had 32 points and 16 rebounds. my goodness. cal wins 59-53. australian open. men's final, eighth seeded. he never won a set off of nadal in 12 meetings. he takes the first set and then in the second, nadal switches back and takes an injured time out and came back to battle. he breaks nadal and said come on, we have to work this out. he wasn't having it.

iconic restaurant on the peninsula. fans dine at joe's of west lake for the last time. it has been around since 1956 serving italian classics like veal pi cata and i can anty. it was sold to the owners of original joe's in san francisco. they plan to open the restaurant early next year, but the change is leaving many fans a bit nostalgic including jerry brown and his wife. they enjoyed their meal there and posted a selfer on twitter and tweeted last day at west lake. >> we will find out. after the holiday proposals, it's time to plan the weddings, folks. >> find out the top wedding plans of 2014. hundreds of brides and grooms to be went to the 11th annual wedding fair at the four science

lawyers for the husband said life support was disconnected about 11:30 today. they had until 5:00 tomorrow to comply with the judge's order to remove her from life support. she was declared brain dead in november and her fetus was not viable, but because she was pregnant, the hospital tried to comply with texas law and refused to remove her from the ventilator. it sparked a national debate about the beginning and end of and whether a woman considered dead should be kept alive for the sake of a fetus. most of us would pay not to get the flu. >> not these folks. why they are voluntarily getting infected.

. a big turn out to honor a japanese american man who stood his ground against discrimination. it was held at the auditorium of san jose state. he refused to go to an internment camp and japanese american citizens were rallied in the second world war. he was arrest and black listed for being unamerican. he was later exonerate and offered the national medal of justice. it is time to push for progress on immigration reform. to a surprise winner and undocumented winner he spoke about just that in his address. >> immigration reform is about

will work. let's keep our fingers crossed. i wanted to tell the you about the huge storm brewing out in the pacific. this is going to change our set up as we head to the upcoming week. it is expected to open the storm door. really change the way our weather has been for the past month or so. we are talking about showers in the forecast and the return of the fog. the morning fog is expected to return as early as tomorrow morning. right up against the coastline and not everybody will wake up to the fog. here's the thinged heading through tuesday, north bay is expecting drizzle and not only that, but widespread fog for everybody and not only tuesday, but here we go. for wednesday and thursday. that's when the chance of rain starts to push into the picture and thursday is expected to be chill we 60s and 60s across the board. at the bottom of the screen, mid- to upper 60s across the south bay from san jose to morgan hill. you will be at 70.

palo alto is 67. san francisco while it will be mild, only mid 60s for tomorrow. north bay and east bay and the trivalley all expecting mid- to upper 60s. again, quite a bit of cloud cover expected. we took care of monday and now let's talk about tuesday. the showers in the north bay, santa rosa. it's not for everybody for tuesday. the north bay, you get the showers for the first half of the day on tuesday and dry out for wednesday morning. then as the system reorganizes and gets itself together wednesday evening, the showers push back through the picture and not only wednesday and thursday are we talking about the chance of showers, but as we push ahead to next weekend. the storm door is expected to stay open and saturday night into sunday now another shot of showers expected for the bay area. this is an excellent news. definitely what we have been waiting for. showers in the forecast and wednesday and thursday for most of us and then again for sunday
